Mayor Duterte: The ‘squeaky-clean’ candidate?

Many of Mayor Duterte’s supporters have portrayed him as the only candidate with no ‘political baggages,’ while portraying his rivals as ‘trapo’ politicians who have to eventually answer back to their patrons. But how accurate is this depiction of the Mayor? Below is a transcript of a conversation

I had with a friend who worked for a significant period in the senate. He asserts that the Mayor is not as squeaky-clean as he is being portrayed to be.

Except for a few revisions to remove names of a few people, I left the transcript raw, to give room for interpretation.

AGS Wow, that's quite a serious accusation. Where did you get that info?

Friend Y messaged me thru FB and cursed me. He read one of my comments before. Ganun sila ka aggressive.

AGS So magkakilala kayo ni Y?

Friend No. Maybe someone alerted him. Then attack na sila.

AGS What exactly did you say to earn his ire?

Friend Naku. Their record in Cotabato is not that good. Kaya halos lahat natalo last elections. They tried to build a dynasty there. Can't believe some of our christian brothers and sisters are justifying mayor's extra judicial killings. Wow.

AGS Yeah, I know mainit ang away ng mga Ys with the other camp. They have been accusing yung mga incumbents of corruption.

Friend Ate, I was recruited to be a part of Duterte's media team pero I refused. Sometime in 2013. Sabi ko private na ako. And the people behind him are GMA's ex-generals. Di ko kaya sikmurain. Duterte can’t even mention the donors of his campaign di ba? Big time miners in mindanao are supporting him, China, and that Pastor Quiboloy.

AGS Wow! So 2013 pa may plan na si Duterte?

Friend Di ko to masabi in public kasi siyempre yung recruitment confi yun. haha.

AGS I understand.

Friend Di siya mismo. Pero the people behind him are determined. In 2014 he was making media rounds na sa VisMin. In 2015 nag ge-guest na siya sa Manila. Imagine the cost para maging guests ka sa mga tv shows. Malaki bayad dun. Millions and millions. His war room office is in Nickel Asia building in BGC. Ang ganda ng set up! Parang pang Holywood haha.Owned by the Zamoras of course.

AGS Kaya ba sya soft kay GMA?

Friend Bone of the biggest nickel supplier in the world! Yes. Sila Z. Ex-U ni GMA. Madaming generals na nakasuhan sa time ni Mar sa DILG. They are all raring to get back at him.

AGS I know Z. Alumnus sya ng Pisay and I know a few people connected to him. Wow. This is big.

Friend Mar removed a lot of benefits enjoyed by the generals during his time at DILG. Bawal mga donations na kotse from fil-chi, bawal ang bentahan ng baril, bawal ang pa raffle ng cash donations ng mga negosyante. Ang daming bawal kasi mali naman talaga.

AGS O yeah, that was the time na kasagsagan ng issue ng corruption sa AFP and PNP.

Friend Robredo started it. Mar continued the reforms.

AGS The 'war room' you were referring to, you mean, owned by Duterte?

Friend War room. It’s where they monitor everything. Multi media etc. High tech!

AGS Monitor what?

Friend Duterte and cayetano’s media exposure. Twitter, Facebook, etc. Di pa nag start ang debate may votes na si duterte na siya ang panalo sa debate. 😂😂😂

AGS So totoo yung chismis na may 'massive internet work' sila going on?

Friend From China and Russia mga votes karamihan. Oo naman! Yung hashtag naka monitor. haha. May software lang yan na binili

AGS Wow! I'm dumbfounded!

Friend Those are the things na di pwede i public. Nakakatakot. Mag post ka ng status na may hashtag and against duterte. Pag gising mo punung puno ka ng messages sa inbox mo na ipapapatay ka etc

AGS True. From Cayetano's side, I know a bit. May ethical issues involving some pastors. I was told the pastors are under his payroll. At matagal na nila inaayos yung pagtakbo ni Cayetano.

Friend China is funding him as well. Dati si Miriam ang favorite ng China nung running for senator siya.

AGS True, my posts are not open to public participation, but I had my share of angry messages.

Friend Cayetano is the binay of BGC. Mas malala pa kasi nakikialam talaga.

Friend I distanced myself sa kanila mga 2 years ago. Na-addict na sa power.

AGS Kanino ka nga pala dati? I mean who did you work for?

Friend Kay X. I hated Mar before kasi ang galing niya sa senate hahahah. Nilalampaso boss ko sa debates hahahah.

AGS Ah, you were with a good guy!

Friend Laging handa yun. As in nag-aaral. Yeah. Senator X is clean. 😀 Maayos sila. Sila ni Mar, Flavier, Magsaysay.

AGS Mukha naman e. And he doesn't pretend when he doesn't know something. He would ask his assistant for info. Sinong Magsaysay?

Friend Okay si Mar nung debate sa cheaper medicines law. Grabe ang hirap kalaban ng pharma lobby. Dami pera. Si Mar binangga lahat. Kahit boss ko di kinaya kasi sisiraan ka talaga sa media pag pabor ka sa cheaper meds law at that time. Jun Magsaysay. Dating senator. Magaling yun at malinis.

AGS Oh, yeah, I know. Sayang, he wasn't able to go back. Anong kinalaman ng media sa mga lobbyist

Friend Medyo ayaw na din ata kasi ng family niya. Even siya medyo ayaw. Too late yung ads niya nun.They pay the media.A lot!

AGS Hay, kabwiset! Everyone is complicit!

Friend Magpapalabas ng negative issues about you. Kaya happy ako sa admin now kasi ang laki ng pinagbago. Far from perfect pero daming na improve. BIR na lang lumaki collections. Sa customs daming nakasuhan.

AGS What about yung accusation kay Mar on his connection with SR mining?

Friend Legit yun na mining company. He is open about it. Di niya tinago yun. Ang weird is bakit tinatago ni mayor.

Friend Nickel Asia is legit. Im sure nagbibigay yan sa lahat. Pero may favorite siyempre mga yan. Kami dati sa chopper ni razon, aboitiz etc humihiram kami. Pero we pay for the fuel and pilot's fees

AGS Actually, a friend emailed me that article on the SR in connection to mar. I said, lahat ng party may ganyan. So if you base your judgment on something like that, you'll be disappointed.

Friend Open yun from the start. Walang tinatago. Pero si Duterte wala siyang inaamin. Pero mga supporters wala lang. Todo defend haha.

AGS Well, kaya nga binanatan si Mar dahil he admitted to the connection. sabi nya, “he's my friend, what's wrong with that.”

Friend Ang tanong ko nga sa loob ng six years gumanda ba buhay mo? Lumaki ba sweldo mo? Nakatulong ka ba sa iba?Kung hindi bakit? Anong ginawa mo?Kami sa senate nagbabayad sa pag gamit ng chopper at private plane. Kailangan mo kasi yun para madami kang mapuntahan

AGS True. I don't want to be naive when it comes to politics. Yun I think ang problem ng marami ngayon, sobrang naive. To them, perfect si Digong. No blemishes. At kahit may malaking blemish, they can actually find excuses for him.

Friend Diyos ko. Sa davao yung lahat ng media na nag expose ng corruption sa davao patay na. Tatlo yun. Unsolved. Pero mga ampatuan hanggang ngayon hari sa davao.

AGS Wait lang, why do you say cayetano is like Binay of BGC?

FriendNo proof ako pero that's what the businessmen say. Humihingi din ata.

AGS Teka, sinong humihingi?

Friend Si Cayetano daw. Sa mga nagtatayo ng building. Pero siyempre sabi sabi lang yun. Ang meron sila mga stores. At least legal naman. No proof ako siyempre about it na humihingi nga.

AGS Okay. At least clear yan. Pero I'm with you on the point that Cayetano is not as clean as he projects himself to be.

AGS Yung issue pa lang ng pastors under his payroll makes me roll my eyes.

Friend May cases ata sila sa ombudsman. Mga gamot etc.

Friend Ang alam kong maayos sa senate yun lang. Mar, Kiko, Magsaysay and Flavier dati. Sa time ko dun. Si Joker pala of course. Grabe ano. Payroll for what!? Gabi gabing pray over? 😂

AGS hindi lang pang pray over. I think ang plan was for them to rally the churches. Pero nagflop yung plan, kasi hindi magaling yung ginawang pastor-coordinator.Deny deny pa sila. Kasi technically, hindi naman suhol. I think, legit na sahod yun. Pero yung ethical implication nun malaki. Talk about conflict of interest.
