Beware of illegal recruiters: DOLE/OWWA

TACLOBAN CITY Leyte, August 7 (PIA) -– The Department of Labor and Employment and the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration warns applicants for local and overseas jobs against falling prey to unscrupulous recruiters.

This move was reached amidst recent reports of illegal recruiters victimizing people in the various parts of the Region and the country as a whole.

DOLE and POEA are coordinating with the Local Government Units in the conduct of advocacy campaigns aimed at educating the people especially those in the hinterlands on how to avoid becoming victims of illegal recruitment.

Ms. Rose Gravoso of POEA 8 said that the first advice to jobseekers is do not apply at recruitment agencies which are not licensed by the POEA. Always ask for the POEA license of recruitment agencies.

Another advice for the jobseekers is do not deal with licensed agencies without job orders. The job orders are the proof that there are jobs open to jobseekers, Ms. Gravoso said.

POEA also cautions jobseekers not to deal with any person who is not an authorized representative of a licensed agency. She said that there is always a way of checking whether the person is really a representative of a licensed agency.

Do not transact business outside the registered address of the agency, Director Gravoso said. If recruitment is conducted in the province, check if the agency has a provincial recruitment authority.

The POEA official called on the jobseekers not pay more than the allowed placement fee. It should be equivalent to one month salary, exclusive of documentation and processing costs.

Furthermore, jobseekers must not pay any placement fee unless they have a valid employment contract and an official receipt.

Do not be enticed by ads or brochures requiring one to reply to a Post Office (P.O.) Box, and to enclose payment for processing of papers.

The POEA also called on jobseekers not to deal with training centers and travel agencies, which promise overseas employment; not to accept a tourist visa; and not to deal with fixers.

Finally, jobseekers may inquire from the Department of Labor and Employment about recruiters visiting them in their respective barangays or municipalities. DOLE will be able to help them to check on the status of the recruiters and recruitment agencies. (PIA 8)
